Dig deeper at SERNEC, a consortium of southeastern herbaria.
An unusual Desmodium species, confusable only with the quite common D. rotundifolium in leaf. This species has a trailing stem, almost vine-like, and it is quite pubescent. Its most distinctive character is that the flowers are creamy to white in color; they are also quite large (about 1/3-inch across). Learn more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.

If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
