Dig deeper at SERNEC, a consortium of southeastern herbaria.
The leaves are essentially filiform "tubes", about 1-2 inches long, and only a few of them are present, such that the stem appears almost free of leaves. Read more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.
Harperella should be (re-)separated from Ptilimnium. (Feist & Downie 2008; Feist et al. 2012), as it is sister to a clade comprised of Tiedemannia (formerly the quill-leaved taxa of Oxypolis) and Ptilimnium sensu stricto (with compound leaves). Read more in Weakley's Flora (2023).

If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
